Going out of Business

Does anyone else feel bad when they see a business going under? I always do. Especially one that has only been in business for a few months. You know that someone thought they had a good idea, spent a lot of time and money into starting the business and then held on and hoped for the best! With every new little restaurant that opens I always want to go and give them a try and try to bring in some business. Unfortunately, I usually don't make it before they close. I don't know that I would ever have the guts to start a business. I would be so afraid of failure. I guess I just don't have the entrepreneurial kind of personality. But I admire those who do have that kind of personality and who do try. Even if they fail.

It is sad, but it is also an important part of our economy. Capitalism thrives on inovation and inovation is largely the fruit of failure. It reminds me of a Michael Jordan commercial where he talks about all of his failures and finishes with the line, "and that is why I succeed."

So we like having people try and start businesses. So much so that we actually subsidize it. (Business losses are tax deductable. Imagine the crushing effect it would have on inovation if it weren't.)

So yeah, try them out while you can, wish them the best, and every now and then one of them may be the next McDonalds, or Spago, or Marie Calendars. (To name 3 restaurant successes of vastly different nature.)
