I've never really enjoyed reading the scriptures too much. I do it, but haven't gotten much enjoyment out of it until now. We decided that we wanted to start reading the scriptures with the kids every night before bed. Not the kid version, the REAL version! Daring, I know! We are starting with 1 chapter each night from the Book of Mormon. The rule is that the kids have to sit on their bottoms with their arms folded and surprisingly, they do a great job! After the chapter has been read we explain to them about the chapter using kid friendly terms and try and pull a lesson out of it for them. This is the reason I have been enjoying the scriptures so much........I have to dissect the meaning of the chapter and it has really helped me appreciate and understand the scriptures more. I think sometimes as adults we over analyze everything and if we would just try to think more like kids do we would enjoy not only the scriptures more, but life in general.
That's just my two cents!

Man...we need to do that...we always start...but then it goes away after while...You have inspired me...
Yeah, we've been through the attempt and then giving it up. I think last time I was frustrated because kids kept arguing about who got to read what.
Incidentally, if you've ever heard of "The Easy to Read Book of Mormon" it started with a woman doing exactly what you are doing: reading to her children and then explaining it to them. She eventually wrote it down so what she has is a modern translation at about a 5-7 th grade reading level and not a 12th grade (I think that's what the standard BoM is at, mostly because it is archaic language.) The Church has NOT endorsed the easy to read version so I won't easier, but it's interesting the projects we do while really trying to understand the scriptures and explain them to our children.
Nice work! This is an area that has been hit or miss for me over the years. I definitely enjoy it more when I can pull personal application from the scriptures. For a while I enjoyed listening to the Book of Mormon on my iPod because I listened to it more as a story. I think it's a good idea to start introducing kids to the real language of the scriptures early on.
What a great thing to do!
Good for you! I'm proud. We need to start that.
thanks for the great idea it is so true.
