Non-Newtonian liquids

I'm not nearly smart enough to understand how these liquids work - for a quick primer you can check them out on Wikipedia. Kristi told me about these the other day, and I just ran across a couple of them on Gizmodo. The first involves a sub-woofer, a metal tray, and some cornstarch in water. Very cool to watch. The next is long-ish (about 4 minutes) and from a Spanish TV show. It's very cool to watch them "walk on water" though.

great videos andy, thanks for the 10 min of entertainment. Actually I watched ellen the other day for the first time in months and she had steve the science guy on and he did the corn starch thing. Some chick from the audience jogged in place on it. Absolutely want to try it...seriously. Spence thought it was cool too.

So is Oobleck going to be the next big hit at the Loveridge Family Reunion? Of course that is a lot of corn-starch.

By the way Andy, I've never heard a really satisfying answer to how Non-Newtonian liquids work. If you ever want a less than satisfying answer I can do my best, but it is cool stuff.

One of my favorite things to do with your kids is a non-Newtonian liquid...Gak. Those kids just love playing with the "projects" as Samantha would call it. Kami was pretty hooked on the stuff too!
